Magnitude 5-strong quake shakes Aichi Prefecture; no tsunami threat

Lian K. Pan·November 7, 2026·4 min read

A strong earthquake struck Aichi Prefecture on Saturday, with shaking reaching the second-highest level on Japan's seismic intensity scale, according to Weathernews. The broadcaster reported the quake at 16:13 GMT on November 7, 2026, and placed the strongest shaking in Chita City, Aichi Prefecture, at intensity 5-strong.

NHK News reported that no tsunami was expected from the event. Japan's Meteorological Agency issued an Emergency Earthquake Early Warning, according to Yahoo! News, which carried a report from NTV News NNN urging residents in the affected area to stay alert for strong shaking.

Why it matters

An intensity 5-strong reading means many people found it hard to stay on their feet and that unsecured furniture could move or topple, based on the standard descriptions of Japan's shindo scale. The scale measures how strongly the ground shook at a given place rather than the energy released at the source, so a single quake can register very differently from one district to the next.

The shaking reported on Saturday was not confined to Aichi. Weathernews listed readings of intensity 3 across a wide stretch of central and western Honshu, from Fukui and Yamanashi prefectures in the north and east down through Nagano, Gifu, Shizuoka, Mie, Shiga, Kyoto, Osaka, Hyogo and Nara. That spread suggests a widely felt event rather than a tightly local one, though the reports available did not specify the quake's magnitude or epicenter.

A broad footprint of shaking

Weathernews' list of intensity 3 locations runs to hundreds of individual observation points, which gives a sense of how far the tremors carried. In Nagano Prefecture, the readings included Iida City, Achi Village, Kiso Town, Komagane City, Suwa City and Shiojiri City. Gifu Prefecture recorded intensity 3 at sites in Tajimi, Nakatsugawa, Minokamo, Toki, Kani, Seki, Gifu City, Ogaki, Hashima, Kakamigahara, Gujo and Gero, among others.

Shizuoka Prefecture's readings covered Hamamatsu's Hamana, Chuo and Tenryu wards, along with Iwata, Kakegawa, Fukuroi, Kikugawa, Shimada, Shizuoka's Suruga and Shimizu wards, Yaizu, Fujieda, Makinohara, Fujinomiya and Fuji. In Aichi itself, intensity 3 was recorded at sites in Toyota City, Nagoya's Naka and Higashi wards, Okazaki, Ichinomiya, Chubu Centrair International Airport, Kiyosu, Ama, Tsushima, Konan, Komaki, Inazawa, Iwakura, Aisai, Kita-Nagoya, Yatomi, Toyoyama, Oharu, Kanie, Minamichita, Tahara, Shitara and Toei.

Mie Prefecture reported intensity 3 in Yokkaichi, Kuwana, Suzuka, Kameyama, Inabe, Toin, Komono, Asahi, Kawagoe, Tsu, Iga and Ise. Further west, Shiga Prefecture listed readings in Hikone, Nagahama, Takashima, Maibara, Aisho, Toyosato, Kora, Taga, Otsu, Omihachan, Kusatsu, Moriyama, Ritto, Koka, Yasu, Konan, Higashiomi, Hino and Ryuo. Kyoto Prefecture recorded intensity 3 in Fushimi Ward, Joyo, Yawata and Kumiyama; Osaka Prefecture at Shijonawate; Hyogo Prefecture at Toyooka; and Nara Prefecture at Takatori.

The reports did not include any immediate information on injuries or structural damage.

What residents were told

The Emergency Earthquake Early Warning is designed to give people a few seconds of notice before the strongest shaking arrives, and the NTV report carried through Yahoo! News advised people in the affected region to brace for strong tremors. NHK's bulletin, meanwhile, focused on the reassuring point that a tsunami was not anticipated.

Weathernews' coverage came through its live stream of the latest earthquake and weather information, which carried the intensity readings as they were compiled.

Japan experiences frequent seismic activity, and the shindo scale's upper levels — 5-strong, 6-weak, 6-strong and 7 — are reserved for the most violent shaking. Saturday's top reading of 5-strong sits below those but remains a level at which people are advised to expect difficulty moving and possible disruption to unsecured objects in the home.

What to watch: whether authorities release the quake's magnitude and epicenter, and whether any damage assessments emerge from Chita City and the surrounding areas.
